Mainland Excursion | Belize City, Belize

During my time in Belize a majority of my time was spent on the island of Caye Caulker. I have already shared a lot about places to eat and enjoy on the island. Be sure to check them out! But one of my favorite days was taking an excursion to the mainland of Belize. Come along as I share some stories about the fun we had that day cave tubing, zip-lining and exploring Mayan ruins.

Belize Excursion

Getting to the exclusion was a process in itself. We started the morning bright and early on the island. We had to make it to the water taxi dock in time for the first boat of the day. After a 45 minute boat ride back to Belize City it was time to meet up with our driver. We definitely lucked out with our private guide for the day. He knew all the tips and tricks to get around and make it an unforgettable day. If you are looking to make the most out of your time in Belize consider hiring a private guide for the day. When I was there we booked out excursion through: Private Belize Adventures and they were phenomenal!

Cave Tubing!

Can you think of anything more relaxing on a hot day than floating down a river through the Belizean rainforest and some ancient cave systems? I mentioned before that our guide was amazing. One of the best parts of having a private guide is they know the schedule and lay of the land. Originally we were going to go to a Mayan ruin before going cave tubing, but because the guide knew there were 3 cruise ships that were scheduled to dock we went right to cave tubing first. We got to beat all of the busses of people from port and were some of the first people in the river for the day. It was so peaceful and relaxing having the place to ourself. Just another reason I recommend hiring a private guide.

Hiking to the start of the cave tubing route

To get started with the cave tubing we had to hike through the rainforest. This hike was not difficult, but there are some water crossing points you need to watch your footing at. Once we made our way up the trail to the start of the cave tubing, it was time to get wet. We waded into the water and got situated in our tubes. Our private guide was with us the entire time telling us stories about the area and some of his favorite parts of Belize. The caves were dark so I didn’t get any good photos inside the caves, but below are a couple photos from the river portion in the jungle.

Jungle Zip-Lines!

After finishing our swim and relaxing floating down the river the next adventure was zip-lining! The cave tubing and zip-lining were both at Nohoch Che’en Caves Branch Archaeological Reserve which made it super easy to hit both before all the cruise tourists showed up. The zip-lines were one of my highlights from the entire trip. There are 9 total lines you can go on at the reserve. Additionally you can add a photo package to get photos of your group. Unfortunately due to drop risk, they do not let you bring your own cameras while zip-lining. Even if you have a fear of heights I would recommend giving the zip-lines a try, they offer a once in a lifetime view of Belize.

There was so much packed into this one day that we can’t fit it all into a single post. Instead the next post will be the second half of the day which was exploring some Mayan ruins and a delicious lunch before returning to the island. I hope if you are planning a trip to Belize you will consider trying these excursion activities for yourself. Until next time continue Seeking Discovery and get out there to Explore Every Day!
