Best Portable Hard Drive | SanDisk 2TB Extreme SSD

Doing work on the go can be a challenge at times. Trying to edit videos and photos can cause headaches while editing large files on slow traditional portable drives. It’s time to upgrade to the best portable hard drive and jump in with a solid state drive. I recently switched from the Western Digital My Passport portable hard drives. Speed Is Everything

One of the most notable things when switching from a HDD to a SSD is the read and write speed of the drive. I mentioned I have been using external HDD drives for years and they work, but aren’t the fastest. One of the things that I really like about this SSD is that it uses USB-C which my Macbook Pro also uses which streamlines the data transfer speeds. The time I have noticed the difference in speed most is when transferring footage or photos off of memory cards directly to my drive. It is easily 2-3 times faster in transferring the data which is extremely nice when there are 100s of gigabytes of data. It is rated to have speeds up to 550MB/s!

Size Also Matters

Another thing to consider when investing in a drive like this is size. The SanDisk Extreme SSD comes in 250GB, 500GB, 1TB, and 2TB currently. The price does increase accordingly with the size of the drive. At the time of this post the 250GB drive was $69.99 and the 2TB was $339.99 (12/16/19 you can get this drive on Amazon for $248.00). Now I know what you are thinking, “How can you spend over $300 on a drive?!” For me I needed more space and wanted a safer drive to travel with in addition to the speed. These drives do go on sale at times, so be sure to check places like B&H Photo Video, Adorama, and Google for sale prices.

What Is In The Box?

So what’s inside the box? It comes with a USB-C to USB-C cord and an adapter for USB-C to USB 3.0. A set of instructions. And of course the solid state drive itself. The packaging is very minimal which is nice, but presents the drive in a nice way when opened. The ability to use USB-C to USB-C was a big selling point for me, but if your computer takes a traditional USB the adapter is nice to have on hand.

Now the drive itself is absolutely tiny! When I compared it to the old portable drives I used I was very impressed. Knowing how much storage there is in this little drive is crazy. Check out the size comparison below!

Safety & Security

This drive provides both digital and physical protection of your data. It comes with the option to install the SanDisk SecureAccess which will password protect your data, but be warned if you lose the password there is no recovery option for the data. For physical protection this drive is both rugged and contains a shock-resistant solid state core which makes it even more durable because there aren’t moving parts. Overall Highly Recommended

I have been blown away with the performance of this drive and how small it is. It gives peace of mind that it is more protected than a traditional spinning disk drive. When on the go and traveling around the world, I want to know my data is protected from bumps, drops, dust and water. If you have been considering getting this drive, go out and do it!
