Mainland Excursion Part 2 | Belize City, Belize

In the last post we shared stories from the first half of the day during a mainland Belize excursion. There was cave tubbing and zip-lining with our private guide that was incredible. If you haven’t had the chance to check out that post you can find it here. If you have, then you already know how much fun it was. Since this excursion day was so packed I decided to split it into two posts. Now its time to share the second half of the day with you all!

Traditional Lunch

After an exciting morning out in the forest it was time to make our way to lunch before our next destination which was Altun Ha. The tour that we booked included lunch, so it wasn’t something we had to worry about. Like most places around Belize chicken and rice are staples. So for lunch we had rice and beans with chicken and some beverages to cool off. I realize now I forgot to take photos of the lunch, but did snap a photo of the back of the coke bottle. Interestingly the Coke from Belize uses cane sugar instead of corn syrup like they do in United States, so be sure to give it a try and see if you can notice the difference!

Altun Ha – Temple of the Masonry Altars

The Mayan ruins that we got to explore during our Belize excursion were Altun Ha. This site was a little off the beaten path and not one that the cruise ships normally go to which meant we got the place almost all to ourselves. Our guide was knowledgeable about the site which made it even more interesting to learn. We were able to climb a few of the structures and get a birds eye view of the site also, but be sure to respect any signs that request you stay off. These sites have stood the test of time and it is our job to help keep them preserved and respect the land.

We lucked out and had a beautiful day to be out exploring the site. To think that these were all constructed without modern day tools is really cool. The labor that went into them is unreal. If you have the chance to visit any ancient ruins I highly recommend spending some time and really taking in everything there is to see. Below are a couple more photos from exploring. The group photo was taken in front of The Sun God’s Tomb which is structure B4. After exploring the ruins, there were also some shopping stands near the entrance to the site. I was able to pick up a nice hand crafted wooden bowl as a souvenir as well!

After a long day of exploring it was time to head back to the ferry dock to catch our boat back to the island. This daylong excursion was one of the highlights of the entire trip. If you have the chance to do any of these activities while in Belize I cannot recommend them enough. I hope you all have enjoyed learning about my trip to Belize. Hopefully I will be able to come back again soon. Until next time remember to ExploreEvery Day and keep Seeking Discovery!
