What Are Malasadas? | Leonard’s Bakery

When I was visiting my friends on the island of Oahu there was one bakery they said we had to try out before leaving the island. That bakery was Leonard’s Bakery. Leonard’s is known for their world famous Portuguese fried doughnuts called malasadas! Before arriving to Oahu the closest thing I have had that is similar to a malasada is a Polish pączki, which is also a fried doughnut but contains fruit filling instead. I must say visiting Leonard’s was a great choice while on the island. If you are visiting Oahu they are located at 933 Kapahulu Ave Honolulu, HI 96818.

Soft, Fluffy, Sweetness

Another noticeable feature of Leonard’s is the bright pink color they use on their boxes and merchandise. It defiantly makes them stand out more. The most popular flavor is the Original which features the doughnut covered in plain sugar. In addition to the Original we also tried the Cinnamon Sugar and Li Hing flavors. For both of these additional flavors the fresh fried dough it tossed in the flavor coating. They also offer filled options and a monthly flavor. You can see a screenshot of their menu below.

More Than A One Time Stop…

I was on the island of Oahu for just about a week and after visiting Leonard’s in the first half of the trip, I knew I would be back before leaving. The day we were scheduled to fly out, I actually made a pitstop to Leonard’s for a few last malasadas before heading to the airport. They are always made fresh so they are warm when brought out to you. One thing to keep in mind is the time of day when you plan to visit. There are really busy times and more chill times when it is easy to get in and out. The first time we had to wait in line and almost couldn’t find a spot to park. On the second trip while heading to the airport we were able to pull into the parking lot no problem and were in and out in a few minutes.

Worth The Calories

These treats were a delicious part of our Oahu trip. Now there is no way I would be able to eat them every day, but they are a nice treat.
